Circle of Security

The Circle of Security

The Circle of Security (COS) is an evidence-based parenting approach that strengthens the parent/carer-child relationship and fosters secure attachment. This program is designed to support families by enhancing emotional connection, resilience, and well-being. Eligible NDIS clients may be able to claim for this service as part of their plan.

Who can benefit from the Circle of Security?

The Circle of Security framework is widely used by social workers and therapists to support families, particularly in contexts of risk or early intervention. It is beneficial for:

  • Carers facing parental challenges.
  • Extended family members, such as grandparents and aunts/uncles.
  • Foster parents and other care professionals.

The program addresses various relationship issues and helps manage difficult behaviours, including discipline and establishing healthy routines and boundaries.

Common issues addressed by Circle of Security

Circle of Security is often sought for children and families dealing with:

  • Neurodiversity, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD.
  • Developmental delays.
  • Anxiety and childhood depression.
  • Aggressive or challenging behaviours.
  • Grief and loss.
  • Attachment issues.
  • Adoption, fostering, and out-of-home care challenges.
  • Trauma, abuse, and neglect.
  • School refusal.
  • Bullying.

What happens during a Circle of Security parenting session?

Session frequency and duration:

  • Sessions typically occur weekly, lasting at least 50 minutes.

Focus:

  • The social worker closely observes the parent-child relationship, identifying attachment patterns and their impact on the child's emotional well-being.

Over the course of the program, parents and carers will:

  • Understand the importance of secure attachment and its developmental impact.
  • Learn to be attuned to their child’s emotional needs.
  • Develop skills to provide a secure base and a safe haven for their child.
  • Learn to validate the child’s feelings and respond appropriately, helping children develop emotional intelligence and a stable foundation for exploring the world.
